Tonight I went along to the Informatics Forum in Edinburgh to listen to an inspiring talk by Euan Semple on how social media can make organisations more effective. I furiously scribbled reams of notes on a few scraps of paper and have reconstructed them here as best I could. Apologies to Euan if I have misquoted or misinterpreted any of his points. The talk was organised by the Edinburgh branch of the British Computer Society.

During Euan’s time at the BBC, he pioneered the use of weblogs, wikis and online forums to enable staff to work more collaboratively. Now an independent advisor on social computing, his insights help bring a clarity of thought to what is, for many, a brave new world.

Accessify Forum

Accessify Forum

Today the Accessify Forum celebrates its sixth birthday. In that time we’ve seen over 60,000 posts, and membership currently stands at about 9,000. For a forum dedicated to web accessibility, I think that’s pretty good.

Perhaps the most endearing aspect of the forum is the wonderful debates we’ve seen over the years. As I wrote back in March, web accessibility relies upon discussion and debate to develop. There are often blurred lines between right and wrong, and real-world accessibility is far from binary. Only through honest debate can we arrive at anything close to the best answer to the questions that the subject poses.

Don’t just sit there – debate!

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I love argument, I love debate. I don’t expect anyone just to sit there and agree with me, that’s not their job.

Margaret Thatcher

Debate and discussion are vital to the progress and development of web accessibility. With that in mind it’s great to see that, as ever, there is plenty of discussion going on out there in the fora, blogs and Tweets of those interested in the subject.

Accessify Forum getting an upgrade

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

One of my more regular haunts, Accessify Forum, is currently being redesigned. You can see the requirements for the new system, as well as contribute to the process.

For those that don’t know, Accessify Forum is an invaluable forum for discussing accessibility. It has over 7,000 members with over 60,000 posts in the past 5 years. It is an essential starting place for web designers and developers wanting to learn more about accessibility, as well as anyone wanting to perfect their knowledge of the subject.

If you’re already a member, head on over there and give your input on how you’d like to see it improved. If you’re not a member, head over there anyway and browse the forums – you’re bound to learn something new!
